Success Story DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company From 1993 to 2014, DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company (now DM Petroleum Operations Company) operated and maintained the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), a cache of up to 700 million barrels of crude oil. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) oil reserve was designed as “energy insurance” against disruptions to the availability of crude oil. With a budget for 2006 of $113 million and just over 500 employees in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, DM worked exclusively for the DOE. When Hurricane Katrina caused DM to relocate operations from New Orleans to Beaumont, Texas, the SPR began delivering oil within 5 days to refineries in the Gulf Coast region, which normally get oil from the Gulf of Mexico. Highlights • Longest-running management and operations contractor in the SPR’s 30-year history • Improvement in drawdown readiness from 95% to 99% or better over 3 years • Improvement in overall customer satisfaction from 67% to 85% (on a 90% scale) over 6 years
DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company, the management and operating contractor for the Department of Energy’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) headquartered in New Orleans, La., received the Performance Excellence Award from the Louisiana Quality Foundation this past Thursday evening, January 22, 2004. This is the third time DynMcDermott has received the award, which is the state’s equivalent of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award administered by the Department of Commerce since 1987. DynMcDermott won the award previously in 1996 and 2001, setting a new record as no other recipient has received the award more than twice.
The award was presented to Mr. Robert McGough, the President and CEO, during its annual awards ceremony and banquet Juban’s Restaurant in Baton Rouge. “DynMcDermott is persistent in our performance improvement efforts and is not satisfied with meeting expectations; our goal is to exceed our customer’s expectations. Our receipt of this award is a tribute to the DynMcDermott work ethic and commitment to customer service.” said Bob McGough, President and CEO of DynMcDermott. The Louisiana Quality Foundation is a non-profit professional association of volunteer professionals committed to assisting Louisiana organizations in achieving performance excellence so as to gain competitive advantages. The Louisiana Performance Excellence Award evaluation criteria are based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria and DynMcDermott is preparing to compete nationally for that award as well.
DynMcDermott also won three environmental awards administered by the Louisiana Quality Foundation. Each of its three Louisiana site locations won the Louisiana Environmental Management Award adding to a long list of national environmental awards the company has received over the past 10 years. National environmental management awards include: the White House Closing the Circle Certificate of Achievement for Model Facility Integrated Pollution Prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health Administrations and Department of Energy VPP STAR Certifications at multiple sites, and the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Environmental Achievement Track Award.
The SPR’s mission is to maintain a state of readiness to respond to the President of the United States should he order the use of the SPR to mitigate the effects of an oil supply emergency. The SPR stores crude oil inside of salt domes located along the Gulf Coast. All DynMcDermott locations are certified ISO 14001 entities.
