LOYOLA UNIVERSITY NEW ORLEANS

Loyola University New Orleans is a Jesuit university founded by the Society of Jesus and chartered by the State of Louisiana in 1912, with ownership vested in the Loyola community of Jesuit fathers.  The University continues to honor its founding purpose of offering an undergraduate liberal arts education, but also offers graduate programs in a number of disciplines as well as pre-professional and professional areas of both undergraduate and graduate study.

The University is located in a residential area of uptown New Orleans.  Fronting on tree-lined St. Charles Avenue, Loyola’s main campus faces Audubon Park.  This nineteen-acre campus is just six blocks from the four-acre Broadway Campus.  Both campuses, with their distinctive architecture, are landmarks on the streetcar line that follows St. Charles Avenue.

Loyola is a medium-sized university with a total of over 5,500 students enrolled in its five colleges, including Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, City College, Law, and Music.  Over a third of the University’s students permanently reside outside Louisiana; all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and fifty-nine foreign countries are represented in the student population.

Loyola is committed to providing a superior education while remaining affordable for its students.  Its success in achieving this dual goal may be measured by its selection every year since 1990 by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the United States as well as by its selection by both Barrons and the New York Times as a best buy in college education.

Loyola’s commitment to the education of the individual student is rooted in the school’s Catholic and Jesuit identity.  The University’s goals statement is eloquent in its description of the purpose of Catholic higher education: The person is central in a Catholic university.  Its task is to equip its students to know themselves, their world, their potential and their Creator.  To perform this function properly, it must strive to be one academic community composed of administrators, faculty, and students, both laypersons and clerics.  This community must be composed in a manner fitting to our pluralistic society and ecumenical age. The aims of a Loyola Jesuit education are summarized in the conclusion of the institution’s Statement of Educational Purpose: “In the Ignatian tradition, Loyola University endeavors to develop students into a new generation of leaders who possess a love for truth, the critical intelligence to pursue it, and the eloquence to articulate it.  The goal of a Loyola education is not mere technical competence but wisdom and social responsibility  It is in the context of this Catholic and Jesuit identity that Loyola has dedicated itself to the education of its students.
